How To Ease Painful Periods With Food

If you suffer from painful menstrual cramps, you may want to revamp your diet. Millions of women around the world suffer from menstrual cramping and an estimated 10-15 percent of women experience menstrual pain severe enough to interfere with their daily activities.

Though my menstrual cramps have never been severe enough to interfere with my day, I did experience cramping like clockwork the day before and 2-3 days after my cycle began as well as dull low back pain. Unless the pain was unbearable, I would not take painkillers, I used to suffer and wait for the pain to pass. This may sound familiar, as many of us ladies are really taught to expect this during “that time of the month” and got used to it.

It wasn’t until I switched my diet to 85-90 percent organic and whole foods (consuming little meat) that my cramps went away. No more suffering for me! Around month four of consuming a mostly organic plant based diet I started to notice my cramps were almost unnoticeable. Now, I never know when my cycle is about to start (unless I look at my Period App) because I have no “warning” cramps! It is really amazing that healing can take place by simply changing dietary patterns. Healing any aliment, ache, pain, or disorder through diet will take time. Healing menstrual cramps could take weeks and even months.

Tips to healing your menstrual cramps:

Start Slow

If you eat meat 3 times a day, trying cutting it down to 1-2 times per day. Saving your meal that contains meat for dinner for example will also be easier on your digestive system.

Greens First

Begin each meal with a very large salad. Top your salad with a rainbow of veggies and a healthy dressing. I love mixed greens with artichoke hearts, tomatoes, cucumbers, alfalfa sprouts, and avocado, and radishes. I am so full after I am done. Starting with a salad will reduce your chances of over eating the main course also. The benefit here is the raw goodness of your salad with loads of vitamins, minerals, and healing properties. Also, add a green smoothie to your morning routine. Its packed with raw fruits and vegetables and will help to reduce period cramping.

Organic Meat

Purchasing meat that is organic, grass fed, and humanely raised is your best bet for better health. Grass fed animals have a higher level of Omega 3 fatty acids, which assist with helping the body produce anti-inflammatory compounds. . Organically raised, free-range animals also have lower levels of hormones, antibiotics, pesticide residue, and other artificial chemicals. These factors are associated with health problems such as menstrual cramping, cancer, and other ailments that begin with inflammation.

Cold Water Fish

Salmon, halibut, cod, sardines, and tuna are all full of Omega-3 fatty acids and lineolic acid, which are great for preventing and soothing inflammation in the body. If you are not a fan of fish, try a high quality fish oil supplement. A fish oil supplement or consuming cold-water fish will help prevent the formation of prostaglandins that cause cramping (inflammation).


Making physical activity a part of your daily life can also aid in reducing cramping as well. It does not have to be anything strenuous, just something to get your body temperature rising and you muscles warm. Practicing yoga, where stretching is a great part of the activity can be extremely helpful.

From the time we get our first period, cramping is thought to be the norm. Just pop some Midol and you will be ok right? Wrong! Periods do not have to be painful. I am living proof of that. Furthermore, taking synthetic mediations over a long period of time is not healthy for the body. Always know that you hold the destiny of your health in your hands.
