Popular Nail Trends & Colors for Dark Skin

Nails designs have evolved tremendously and are now considered to be just as important as the perfect accessories to accentuate your feminine attire. The key to perfect nail selection is: nail shape, choosing a design based on not only what is trending, but what is also, flattering to your nail bed, finger shape/length, and considering color shades that compliment your skin tone.

Contrary to popular belief; bright colors are radiant on darker skin tones. It's all about selecting a shade with warm undertones which highlight your hue. For example, the picture above is a shade of pinkish/orange. Providing the vibrancy that orange brings; while toning it down with pink undertones which never seems to fail our dark complexion. Choosing the perfect nail color is similar to eyeshadow; nothing wrong with brightening it up, just be mindful of the tone. Also, do not be afraid to mix colors for an achieved color/look. This is a personal tip I use often which allows me to create customized colors that aren't available.

I recommend that the longer the nail, the simpler the design. Unless your nails are apart of a themed event, costume, or you work in a profession where this is embraced or expected such as an artist or performer; it is best to keep your nail designs classy and professional. Nails much like fashion is a form of expression, have fun, but don't over do it!

Keep it cute, make your selection simple. Sometimes, less really is more. In this look your nails are natural upon appearance even if acrylic powder or nail extensions are used. The nails are typically short, well manicured, painted a solid color, with no design. Growing up my auntie referred to this as "baby doll" nails. Delicate and "dollish".

When in doubt always choose "pink". There are numerous shades, therefore you're guaranteed to find a shade that is a great match for your tone. I'd go as far to say that you may find multiple shades offering a variety of pink plethora.

Purple polish makes a great second option if you're uncertain on a great color to compliment your tone. Similar to pink, purple provides our pigmented hue variety in shades that almost never "do no wrong"!

Selecting a flattering nail shape is equally as important as choosing the correct nail color. There are always exceptions to the rule as you may encounter a nail technician that can make any design or shape flattering. However, upon personal experience and observation I find that women with long slender fingers typically look good with coffin and stiletto shaped nails; whereas women with short/stubby fingers look good with squoval or almond shaped nails.

The width of your nail bed should also, determine your nail shape. If you have a wide nail bed, shapes like stiletto and coffin typically require the nail tech to shave down the sides of your nail bed to achieve the desired look which is a disservice to your overall nail health. Women with small slender hands can rock the round or oval name shape flawlessly.

The same rules apply for your feet as well, give or take certain nail shapes. I also, think in terms of designs you can have a bit more fun and get creative with your feet simply because while it is a clear indication of how well you groom yourself, toenail designs aren't something that typically cause an uproar or are deemed unprofessional.
