The Benefits of Fasting - Weight Loss for Black Women

Fasting is the abstinence from all or certain foods or drinks. Fasting is also viewed as a form of sacrifice and self discipline which in turn provides organic healing, medicinal, and health benefits. The beauty of fasting is it can be curtailed to meet specific needs; fasting is used to target a specific weight loss goal, rid and/or maintain an ailment, and considered to be a powerful alternative to treatments such as as chemotherapy and dialysis. Fasting detoxifies and beautifies the the body internally; it’s like hitting the reset button on your metabolism and internal organs.

Raw Fruit and Vegetable Fast

Heating food destroys the nutrients and natural enzymes which are needed for digestion and to fight chronic disease. A raw food diet can cause headaches and allergies to subside, boost immunity, and reverse the symptoms associated with diabetes. Foods such as raw fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and sprouted grains like quinoa and barley are incorporated into the diet during the raw food fast. It is ideal to refrain from cooking foods during the raw food fast; however blenders and food processors are allowed.

Juice Fast

A juice fast is comprised of fruit and vegetables liquefied into fresh juices. The objective is to refrain from consuming solid food; this method of fasting is commonly used for detoxification of the body and as an alternative to modern medicine. It is also important to consume plenty of water; preferably spring as it contains natural minerals and flushes out the toxins within the body. If it is your first time partaking in a juice fast do not set the duration of your fast to exceed past 7 days. Be sure to monitor your body closely and make observations about how you feel; physical activities like, working out are contingent upon the level of fatigue some may experience.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is in a category of its own; there are several ways you can do this. One way to intermittent fast, is to fast for 16- hours and eat within a 8-hour time span being mindful of your caloric intake, the key is to remain in a calorie deficit if your goal is to lose weight. For example, I could start my day at 6 am and not consume my first meal until 12 noon and have my last meal or snack by 8 pm; for the remaining 16 hours I would fast only consuming water until 12 noon the following day. Another way to intermittent fast is to consume your meals as usual and select 2 times out of the week to fast for a complete 24-hour duration. This form of fasting is said to aid in weight loss, inflammation, and insulin resistance.

The holiday season is near; cold weather and festive events are the perfect invitations to pack on the pounds and plump up that summer body. Consider these fasting options as a form of body maintenance and preventative measures to avoid having to work so hard come the first of the year.
