4 Types of Best Friends Every Black Girl Needs

Every girl needs a special friend (or four) who helps make your life a little bit easier and a lot more entertaining. Whether you call it a tribe, squad, crew, clique or posse, building a variety of relationships with like-minded people is one of the most fulfilling aspects of life. The world can be quite cruel to black women especially, so it’s fundamental that we surround ourselves with people who offer empathy, support and total acceptance.

1. The Mentor

Mentoring is one of the ways we can combat low self-esteem, teenage pregnancy, high school dropout rates and early sexual activity in the black community. A mentoring relationship between Black women and Black girls encourages them to break through stereotypes and helps create a pathway for them to step into roles of leadership. Every black girl needs a positive female role model who can offer the necessary encouragement and support and guide them as they overcome obstacles and difficulties. Even if you don’t have a mentoring program in your community, look for someone who is a few steps ahead of you in life and has the wisdom and patience to help guide you.

2. The Funny One

This friend is a daily reminder that even though life may be filled with stressful moments and tumultuous situations, it is ultimately supposed to be fun! You can text this friend about how bad your day at work was or about how you just failed a final exam, and she’ll have you laughing and clutching your belly in minutes! One of the most reassuring aspects of life is that, no matter how chaotic it may get, you can always laugh. The people who remind you of this fact are the people you should keep around.

3. The Down-To-Earth Girl

This friend has no qualms about calling you out on your bullshit. Want to know if a dress makes you look frumpy or need advice on your relationship or career? Ask her…brutal honesty is her specialty. The chances are you value his or her opinion the most, because they never beat around the bush and everything they predict tends to come true. This is the kind of friend who encourages you to make scary but important life changes. You can also rest assured that this friend will never lie to you or talk behind your back because backstabbing and sneakiness are just not in their nature. It doesn’t matter who you’re with, she’ll always speak her mind because she’s reliable! And even though it may be tough to hear, you’ll always appreciate her criticism because you’ll know it’s coming from a loving place.

4. The Sister-Friend

This girl may not actually be your sister, but she sure feels like one! Even in your lowest moments, she stands by your side. She’s the non-judgmental friend with whom you can share all your deepest secrets with—including less-than-flattering facts about yourself. Because she knows all your weak spots and insecurities, she’s likely also one of the only people in the world who has the power to truly, deeply hurt you. But even in the case of a fight, you never have to worry about her betraying your confidence. This friend has seen you at your worst and still loves you, and all your secrets are safe with her. Her words of wisdom are like salve on a wound.

If you’re still looking for your group of ride-or-die besties, you can rest assured that there’s an app for everything these days—including making friends! Download apps like Hey! Vina, Bumble BFF or to get involved in your community and expand your tribe.
