Why You Should Travel More

1. Exposure To Different Cultures

Culture isn’t just a thing you’ll find in Europe. Visit South America, Africa, or Asia for many incredible and irreplaceable memories. In particular, Africa is a truly gorgeous continent that is not visited nearly enough (in my opinion). There are places that snow, hot deserts, grasslands, waterfalls and an amazingly wide range of unique wildlife! Even though colorism is global, there are many places where natural hair and dark skin are the norm and are celebrated, and Africa is one of them.

2. It Makes You Open-Minded

Mark Twain once said, “travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-minded” and his quote still rings true today. Travel will not only expose you to different cultures, but it will help you figure out your blind spots and make you more open-minded. After exposing yourself to a multitude of cultures, you may find yourself more willing to listen to different worldviews, and more importantly, more able empathize and respect those who think differently than you.

3. Opportunity to Make Friends

Staying in a hostel is one of the best ways to make friends abroad. You’ll meet wanderlust backpackers and experienced world-travelers who may even be willing to give you a tour of interesting places and tourist hotspots. The friends you make abroad have a good chance of lasting forever, since you’re widening your exposure to people with similar personalities and interests that may gel perfectly with yours. There’s nothing like bonding with a travelling buddy while sharing a meal or exploring a new city together.

4. Science Says It’s Good For You!

Studies show that travelling can help boost your feelings of happiness and contentment, and decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease! Vacationing regularly can even lengthen your lifespan and reduce your chance of a heart attack. Travel can also work wonders on your mental health, lower your stress levels and prevent your risk of clinical depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

5. You Will Make Incredible Memories

Even if everything doesn’t go as planned on your travel adventure, it’s likely that you wouldn’t want to trade the memories in for a material good such as a car, or even a house. Travelling allows you to meet new people, visit new places, experience new foods and expose yourself to new cultures. Whereas clothes and luxury items can be easily replaced, memories of travel will bring you joy for years to come and are worth much more in the long run.

6. You CAN Afford it

You can afford to travel, but you’ll have to adjust your standards a little. Set aside money for a travel fund every single day—even if it’s just a couple of dollars. Once you’ve saved enough to travel, make sure to save money while on your trips as well. Buy groceries, instead of eating out every day and couchsurf or stay in a hostel dorm, rather than making reservations at a luxurious hotel.

“While some have described her as overly opinionated, Grace much prefers the terms headstrong and passionate. She is a voracious reader, a dog-lover and a self-professed pop culture junkie. Her other hobbies include watching sappy romantic comedies, consuming too many strawberry-filled doughnuts and people-watching. Grace currently attends university, where she is working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Pre-Law.”
