Rihanna's highly-anticipated makeup line Fenty Beauty was officially launched online around the world at midnight on Friday September 8th. After watching the beauty line's live stream on Facebook which featured Rihanna herself applying the makeup products on beautiful dark skinned models like Duckie Thot and Leomie Anderson, it's safe to say that this makeup line is fit to receive the dark skinned stamp of approval.
The pop star mogul rolled out her makeup line with a plethora of products, including a wide foundation range of 40 shades, an array of highlights, brushes, a primer, contour sticks, translucent powder, and a universal lip gloss fit for any skin tone. When asked about the shade range and inclusivity of her line, Rihanna expressed her ultimate goal being that everyone, from pale ivory to the darkest of chocolate skin, feels included and catered to. "You want people to appreciate the product and not feel like 'oh that's cute, but it only looks good on her.’"
The makeup community was on site, literally, for the launch and was able to give plenty of swatches of the products so people could get an idea of what they'd be buying. The foundation is the most notable product of the entire line. With 40 shades and several different undertones to choose from, it can get a little tricky especially shopping online since there’s so much to choose from. Our dark skinned sisters were generous enough to swatch all the darker shades. Though if you can, it's best if you get matched in person because there's so many different undertones and it turns slightly darker as it dries, so you may want to get it in person for the most accurate match.
The darker end of the spectrum is not as expansive as the lighter side but Rihanna herself has said that more shades are in the works. Though I think we can agree this is a good job for a first launch! Many other established makeup brands like Benefit, Too Faced, YSL, and even drugstore brands like L'Oreal and Maybelline aren't this nuanced when it comes to the darker shades so I give props to Rihanna for putting in this effort. Even Nyma Tang and Duckie Thot have a shade in the line, which is number 490 for reference.
The highlighters come in two different formulas; cream and powder. The infamous Trophy Wife Killawatt Highlighter which Rihanna wore to the launch event, seems to be the most popular shade. It's a gorgeous and bold golden color that leans strongly on the yellow side, so I suggest having a light hand with it. It also looks especially striking on darker skin tones. There's a total of 6 powder highlighters and 4 of them are duos, so you get two colors in one compact with those.
The Match Stix are magnetized cream highlighters, concealers, and contour colors that you can mix and match to fit your skin's needs. There's a total of 30 different Match Stix: 10 are highlight/blush shades and 20 are contour and highlighting shades.
As if all the beautiful shades and packaging Rihanna came up with weren't tempting enough, the price range is just as great. Ranging from $10-$54, her products won't break your bank like most other celebrities who come out with their own beauty lines. The foundation retails at $32-$34 and the highlights are around $25 which is average for your typical high-end makeup brand,
especially one that retails at Sephora.
